In the Bible, especially in the Old Testament, names which were given to people had deep meaning, for instance Jacob – supplanter and Moses – drawn out. In the New Testament there was Barnabas – son of encouragement. Before the crucifixion the people chose Barabbas to be released instead of Jesus. The meaning of the name Barabbas was son of the father, and this father was the devil. The gospel was spelled out through the names in Genesis – Seth – appointed, Enosh – mortal, Cainan – sorrow, Mahalalel – the blessed God, Jared – came down, Enoch – teaching, Methuselah – his death shall bring, Lamech – strength, Noah – comfort. I.a.w. God has appointed that mortal man shall sorrow, but the blessed God came down teaching that His death shall bring strength and comfort. Jesus means saviour – totally, powerfully and fully saved. In Jesus we are saved financially, from sin and disease, from destruction and we are delivered from the hand of the enemy. Total peace, well-being, restoration, wholesomeness and victory have come into our lives. His name is powerful! The key to being identified with Jesus is that we need to embrace and long for Him completely, instead of just longing for what He can do for us.
