In our journey of faith, we often express our love for God through heartfelt worship, passionate prayers, and emotional declarations. While these expressions are beautiful and meaningful, there’s a profound truth we must confront: the ultimate measure of our love for God lies in our obedience to His commands.
This challenging yet transformative concept is woven throughout Scripture, reminding us that love for God is more than just sentiment—it’s a commitment to action. Jesus Himself said, “If you love me, keep my commands” (John 14:15). This simple yet powerful statement sets the foundation for understanding true devotion.
But what does this obedience look like in practice? It’s not about following a set of rigid rules out of fear or obligation. Rather, it’s about aligning our will with God’s, allowing His love to flow through us and manifest in our actions. As we read in 1 John 2:3-6, “We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands… Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.”
This obedience is the fruit of a genuine relationship with God, not a religious duty. It springs from a heart transformed by His love, eager to please Him in all things. When we truly love God, we don’t ask, “What’s the minimum I can do?” Instead, we ask, “How can I honour Him more?”
The beauty of this obedience is that it’s not meant to be burdensome. As 1 John 5:3 reminds us, “In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome.” When we walk in step with God’s Spirit, we find that obedience becomes a joy, not a chore.
Consider the biblical examples that illustrate this principle. Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice Isaac demonstrated a love so profound that he was willing to give up everything for God. Mary’s humble acceptance of God’s plan for her life, despite the potential for scandal and hardship, showed a love that prioritised God’s will above personal comfort or reputation. And of course, Jesus Himself exemplified perfect obedience, even to the point of death on a cross, out of love for the Father and for us.
These examples challenge us to examine our own lives. How often do we profess love for God with our lips, yet hesitate to follow through with our actions? It’s easy to sing about loving Jesus on Sunday morning, but do we carry that love into our daily decisions, relationships, and priorities?
True love for God manifests in practical ways:
1. Walking away from sin and resisting temptation
2. Forgiving others, even when it’s difficult
3. Loving our enemies
4. Giving generously, even when finances are tight
5. Serving others selflessly
6. Being honest in all our dealings
7. Praying consistently, not just in times of need
The good news is that we’re not left to our own devices in this pursuit of obedience. God promises to empower us through His Spirit. As prophesied in Ezekiel 36:27, “And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.” This indwelling Spirit enables us to obey from the heart, transforming duty into delight.
It’s important to note that this obedience isn’t about earning God’s love—we already have that unconditionally. Rather, obedience is our loving response to the grace we’ve received. It’s how we remain within the “boundaries of God’s love” (Jude 1:21), experiencing the fullness of relationship with Him.
Moreover, obedience in the small, everyday matters prepares us for faithfulness in larger tests. Just as Jesus, having cultivated a lifestyle of forgiveness, was able to forgive even from the cross, our consistent obedience in seemingly minor areas builds spiritual muscle for life’s greater challenges.
This call to obedience-driven love is not about perfection, but direction. It’s about a heart posture that says, “Yes, Lord” instead of “No, Lord”—two phrases that are mutually exclusive. When we stumble, as we all do, the key is to repent quickly, receive God’s forgiveness, and return to the path of obedience.
As we cultivate this kind of love-fueled, Spirit-empowered obedience, we’ll find that our worship becomes more sincere, our prayers more powerful, and our witness more compelling. We’ll be worshipping God in spirit and in truth, as Jesus described.
Reflecting on this truth invites us to ask ourselves some challenging questions:
– Are there areas of my life where I’m resisting God’s commands?
– How can I cultivate a more obedient heart in my daily routines?
– What would it look like to love God through my actions this week?
Let’s remember that love for God is not proven in words alone, but in surrendered obedience. While emotions may fade, obedience rooted in truth remains steadfast. As we align our lives with God’s will, we’ll discover a depth of relationship with Him that goes beyond mere sentiment—a love that transforms us from the inside out.
May we all grow in this kind of love—a love that listens, a love that follows, a love that obeys. For in doing so, we not only honour God but also find our truest fulfilment and joy. As we step out in obedience, may we experience the truth of Jesus’ words: “If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love” (John 15:10).
Let’s commit to being not just hearers of the Word, but doers—for this is where true love for God is ultimately revealed and experienced.
